Jacob Gallagher (played by Joe-Warren Plant) was arrested by the police after becoming embroiled in gun crime, finally sneaking out to run away with local thug Josh Crowther (Connor Chapman) in tonight’s episode.

While the harmless teenager was merely trying to protect his friend from further trouble – after Josh stole Eric Pollard’s (Chris Chittell) shotgun to try and scare a bully from the village, the situation quickly escalated and Jacob was left feeling abandoned by his family.

He initially told Josh he wouldn’t run away to Birmingham with him, but after hearing his biological mother Leyla Harding (Roxy Shahidi) say that she thought he would go to prison, the scared youngster crept out of her house in the middle of the night.

“Unless he tells the truth, he could go to prison. I mean as far as the police are concerned he is just a gun-wielding teenager who won’t rat out his mate. Where does that leave him?” Leyla had said thoughtlessly, as an upset Jacob sat on the stairs.

Meanwhile, love rat Pete Barton (Anthony Quinlan) took even more risks in tonight’s episode, after he accidentally sent a revealing text to his fiancée Leyla that was meant for Priya Sharma (Fiona Wade).

As fans wait for Pete’s lies to blow up in his face, Anthony has teased that the eventual reveal could spell the end for his time on Emmerdale.

Speaking to Soaplife, the actor first denied ever wanting to change careers, as he said: “No! Acting is my passion. But you never know when you might be out of a job. If that day comes, I want to have something to fall back on that I love as much as acting.”

The 32-year-old then went on to admit: “You never know what’s round the corner in this profession. It’s coming up to October before long and that’s always a dangerous time to be in the village.”

The former Hollyoaks actor could be the second Barton to leave the village, after Adam (Adam Thomas) – who is married to Victoria Sugden (Isabel Hodgins) – revealed he was departing the soap after eight years.

Will Pete leave in an explosive episode that sees Leyla learn the truth about the people closest to her, and will Jacob return?

Emmerdale continues Monday at 7pm on ITV.
